So ist in der aktuellen Bildungsdebatte einzugestehen, dass dieses Thema nicht plötzlich aus dem Nichts auftauchte, sondern anscheinend Erkenntnisse in Vergessenheit gerieten, die unserer modernen Gesellschaft aus der Antike hätten vorliegen können. Genau diese Gegebenheit hat das besondere Interesse an dieser Hausarbeit geweckt. Bevor guy sich der Aufgabenstellung widmen kann, welche Rolle die Rhetorik im Rahmen der „Artes liberales“ spielt, ist es sinnvoll in Punkt 2 zunächst eine Klärung des Begriffes unter Berücksichtigung des terminologischen wie mythologischen Hintergrundes vorzunehmen. Ist das Wesen dieser geklärt, stellt sich nun die Frage: „Wie viele und welche Fächer umfasste dieser Wissenschaftskanon gewöhnlicherweise und wie wurden diese eingeteilt?“
Hierauf soll Punkt three „Die Fächereinteilung der Artes liberales“ eine Antwort geben. Schon zum dortigen Zeitpunkt der Arbeit wird eine Eingrenzung des Stoffgebietes auf die „gewöhnliche“ Darstellung der „Artes liberales“ erfolgen müssen. Denn die vollständige und somit weitläufige Berücksichtigung historischer Entwicklungsaspekte hätte den geforderten Umfang dieser Hausarbeit bei weitem überstiegen.
Im vierten Punkt wird die Frage geklärt werden, welche Rolle die Rhetorik im Rahmen der „Artes liberales“ im lateinischen Mittelalter gespielt hat.
